The World Demand For Soda Ash

Soda ash is a basic, inorganic chemical building block. Its primary application in the glass industry tracks closely with Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The three major end uses for soda ash are glass, chemicals and detergents, accounting for about 74% of total demand. Of these, the glass industry is the most significant end use sector, consuming more than half the soda ash produced on a global basis. Container glass is the largest single application, with 24% of overall demand and represents almost half the total glass demand for soda ash. Soda ash demand for flat glass, represents around 21% of demand. This article focuses on the world demand for this important resource.
