Why Glass And Other Things Break

Early last century, it was realized that a solid is a collection of atoms held together by chemical bonds. Once enough of the bonds have broken, the solid will eventually crack. This article looks how the atoms of brittle materials such as glass and ductile substances are affected differently by stress and explains how both materials eventually break.
