Vibrational Spectra Of Silicate Glasses Modelled On The Basis Of Sio4-Ring Structures

The infrared absorption spectrum of vitreous silica is calculated using the quasi-cluster method for determining the eigen frequencies and atom vector displacements of rings composed of silicon-oxygen tetrahedra. The results show that the observed infrared spectrum of v-SiO2 can be successfully explained by the existence in the glass of puckered 4 and 6-membered rings as well as of a small amount of 3-membered planar rings.
