Using Laser Beams On The Data Highway Into Space

Until now, laser light has never been used as a data transmission medium in any civilian space communication system before. With its SILEX prject (Satellite Interlink Experiment), the European Sace Agency (ESA) has now started to implement the use of optical data communication in space, a technique already widely employed on earth.
