Use Of Single Layered Toughened Glass For Sound Barriers

This paper deals with experimental investigation of durability and reliability of single layered toughened glass panes with the dimensions of 2,0x 2,0m, which are the point of interest for glass suppliers to be used in the system of sound barriers, placed near highways and railways. Main part of the research was focused on determining of the effect of flying stones on pertinent glass breakage. Impulse of the force at load introduction point was measured by strain gauges placed in both directions. Response of the glass pane obtained from strain gauges was evaluated for glass thickness of 12 and 15mm. Glass pane was subjected to the impact load in the middle of the span as well as near the corners and connection details to proof its resistance in the most dangerous cases. Results of this study may help to enlarge the field of glass structure engineering and to understand that transparent plastic materials are not the only ones to be used for sound barrier walls.
