Sisecam Sees Energy Savings With Calumite

Calumite is known as an environmentally beneficial alumina source due to its ability to reduce energy consumption, reduce furnace temperature and reduce CO2 and NOx emissions. In this paper, Results are presented of a trial at Sisecam's Mersin container plant where Calumite replace feldspar as the sole alumina source in the batch. Significant savings were achieved with 25% reduction in electrical energy consumption, 3% reduction in total energy and 5% reduction in total energy cost. The trial was carried out ina 250/tpd oil-fired green container furnace with electric boosting using 40% cullet. The level of Calumite required to provide the desired alumina level was 13% of the dry sand weight. The Calumite was added in 2% stages, then held at 13% for two weeks before removal in similar stages.
