Notwithstanding shaky economic conditions worldwide in the mid to late 90s, which had a knock-on effect in Brazil, the glass industry in Latin America's largest country continues to flourish, especially in the area of scientific research and development. In this paper the authors review the capacity of the Brazilian glass sector in the 1990, and point out the need to stimulate more interaction between university research centres and the main glass manufacturers.
