Dolomite is one of the most ubiquitous carbonate minerals and is commercially exploited on a large scale worldwide for many applications. However, its production for use as a refractory raw material is limited to only a handful of specialised producers, and even this select group, dominated by large, international raw materials groups, has shrunk in recent years. Refractory grade, or dead burned dolomite continues to suffer the same fate as all refractory raw materials in today's markets - that of declining demand in volume owing to the improved technical performance of higher quality refractory products. Nevertheless, dolomite is enjoying steady demand in certain niche areas, and is even succeeding in displacing rival materials.
