The Albany Research Centre is conducting research on recycling/alternative uses for spent refractories. Spent refractories were sampled from a rotary reverbatory furnace of a secondary brass and bronze producer. These spent refractories consisted primarily of 70% alumina brick. Physical, chemical and microstructural properties of the spent refractory were studied. The results indicated high levels of Pb pickup in some areas of the furnace. The location of Pb components and how they are present in the microstructure is discussed. Chemical reactions between metal, slag, and refractory in the furnace environment are also addressed. Recycling efforts and some suggestions for beneficiation and refractory improvements are proposed.
