Alumina - aluminium oxide, Al2O3 - is an important component in glass, with contents reaching levels up to 25% in some applications such as glass ceramics. As a network stabiliser in glass structures, it improves resistance to impact, thermal shock and corrosion. According to the authors of this article, specialty aluminas provide more than just a source of Al2O3 for the glass making process.
