Bubbles, crystalline seeds, cords and other such inclusion formed during the commercial production or treatment of glasses have posed significant problems for the glass industry. These defects are undesirable in commercial glass material because of their effect on either the appearance or the optical and mechanical properties of a glass object. Raman microprobe analysis provides a nondestructive method to determine the chemical or structural nature of various inclusions and other inhomogeneities in glasses without breaking the glasses. In this review, Raman microprobe studies of inclusions in glasses such as bubbles and cords are discussed.
