Prediction Of The Leakage Presure Of A Cap And Bottle Assembly Using The Finite Element Method

Metal closures, with an integrated gasket, are widely used in the food industry to ensure the sealing of the glass bottles by setting. The success of this bottle capping is due to the relevant choice of the variables in the manufacturing process. In this paper, the leakage pressure of a cap-bottle assembly by a standard setting operation is predicted by a numerical simulation. The finite element simulation method of the cap-bottle setting process gives the global distribution of forces on the gasket according to the internal pressure. The leakage pressure of the assembly is then predicted by combining the finite element results with experimental leak testing of a loose cap compressed on top of a bottle neck.
