Changes in environmental legislation are forcing glass producers to adopt new combusiton technologies in order to reduce pollutants and harmful emissions. Adoption of 100% oxy-fuel firing of glass melters has become an acceptable standard, being used throughout the world on virtually every glassmaking process. This paper discusses the advantages of using PLC-based control systems for control of any oxy-fuel melter; including certain control techniques which will help manufacturers use oxygen efficiently while maintaining high glass quality standards.
