[Pilkington] Through The Looking Glass

The performance of the UK construction industry continued to decline significantly in 2012, with figures showing big reductions in output across all of the main industry sectors. Fewer new homes were built and there was a 16% fall in output from the private commercial sector during the three months to November and a 20% decline in public sector housing output over the same period. Other public sector work has also fallen back significantly, down 17% between September and November 2012. This has had an effect on the glazing industry with fewer orders for both new domestic properties and commercial buildings. With a decline in the volume demand for glass, it is important to investigate new ways for companies to retain profitability, and can be done by adding value to existing products, as well as researching new products and ideas.
