The design and setting of a glass furnace, as well as the combustion system or the power distribution, have an influence on refractory life, pollutant creation and glass quality. Therefore, any significant change of the furnace operation can lead to an important industrial risk. This article describes how coupled numerical modelling can be used as a decision making tool to validate technical options and to predict in a reliable way melting performance for a negligible cost.
