An alternative solution to the normal cooling of shear blades for cutting glass into gobs has been developed. This involves glass cutting devices for IS machines with an angular movement of the shears. Results have shown that the use of emulsion can be reduced to about 24-40 litres per day at a nitrogen consumption of 20-25 NM3/H. The main parts of the system are a vacuum isolated rotational joint and evaporators that are mounted on the standard type of shears. Continuous operation since the beginning of 1993 has indicated an increase in pack-rate and a decrease in cutting marks as well as a longer average shear life time.
