The basic design of the melting tanks used in the glass industry today has hardly changed. Modification of the conventional furnace design should be based on the attempt to shorten the melting time and narrowing the residence time distribution. Using subatmospheric pressure or high temperatures for rapid fining, seems to be the direction for further improvements in industrial glass melting.
