The glass industry is facing a challenge as modern technology opens up new possibilities for ultra-high quality specialized glasses that are virtually defect free. As always, these glasses have to compete with the development of alternative materials and therefore need to give guaranteed results of the lowest capital and operating costs possible. This article explains how past experience, together with a new approach, can lead to a furnace design capable of melting a glass that meets the ultra-high quality standards required by communications technology while containing costs.
