Neutrons Let Researchers See Stress, Strains (Advanced Ceramics)

Stress, the result of force acting on an object, dramatically affects the performance of materials. Stresses can be external or internal. Designing parts to withstand stress during use is a key aspect of product design. Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory use IPNS (Intense Pulsed Neutron Source) to see through advanced ceramic and metal composites, high-Tc materials and nuclear reactor component mockups.
