Between 1998-2007, the global bottled water market generated compound annual growth of 9% and a whopping 108BN litres of new consumption. It was one of the biggest drinks booms ever seen. This renaissance of bottled water was undone by a double whammy of financial meltdown and mounting environmental concern over throwaway plastic bottles. In N America, for example, the sector leaked over 200M litres in 2009 compared with a gain of 3BN litres only two years earlier.
