With service lives for modern glass melting tanks of up to 12 years the liklihood of having to carry out some sort of repair to prevent major damage is high. Of the various repair options available any that can be carried out without cooling the furnace down will be preferred because they cause the minimum disruption to production. In this article the areas of the furnace which are most at risk from premature wear are covered and the materials available for their repair.
