The existence, location, and possession of the Holy Grail are millennia-old questions that intertwine history, mythology, archeometry, and of course, theology. There have been relatively new claims that the Grail was made out of glass. These claims raised questions related to glassmaking in the late century BC and early century AD and whether this article, if it exists, is made out of glass at all! Other precious materials were known to be available during this period, but then again, why a precious material at all? Why not wood or common clay? By extension, these considerations poised additional questions about its existence and authenticity from a materials science viewpoint. This presentation reviews some of the important literature and articles of antiquity on the subject and pose still other questions that may be of interest.
