High-Speed Digital Optical Processing In Future Networks

Optical networks have the potential capacity to handle vast quantities of data, but until now the optical domain has been used only as an unintelligent analogue transmission medium. In this paper the authors advance the concept of "digital optical processing" in networks to provide a powerful interface between electronic data platforms and the optical domain. Digital optical processing provides the key to increasing the speed and functionality of data networks.
