The glass industry in India has a story of its own. In August 1908, the first glass plant in India was set up by Lokmanaya Bal Ganga Dhar Tilak who collected one paisa per family per month from the masses. The factory was named Paisa Fund Glass Works. From this beginning, the glass industry has made steady progress. There were only three factories when World War 1 broke out; 14 factories had commenced production by the end of 1918. The largest expansion of the industry took place after 1939 and by 1953, there were 243 glass factories in India. The phase of modernisation commenced thereafter and machines started replacing mouth-blowing and hand-working processes. The first automatic container plant was set up in 1943.
