Slowly, but with a steadily increasing rate, studies have appeared on the processes occurring during the radiation of inorganic glasses, particularly on the structure of various colour centres and on the mechanism of their formation and decomposition. It is obvious that these studies required experiments with glasses of the simplest possible composition to simplify the complexity of these processes, and to make the interpretation easier. For this reason, a large number of studies were made with pure crystalline quartz and fused silica.
