Basic scientific principles relating to the generation of tensile stresses by loads applied to glass objects are discussed in this article. Examples illustrate these principles and how they must be relied upon in all fracture analyses. The result is the avoidance of mistakes and costly errors that do nothing to solve the underlying problems. Careful adherence to basic principles will enable breakage problems to be correctly diagnosed with the enactment of prompt and correct solutions.
