Formation Of Boron Carbide Whiskers And Platelets

Boron carbide (B4C) whiskers and platelets have been synthesized via carbothermal reduction of B203. Carbon black and B203 were used as raw materials. K2CO3 and NiCl2 were used to facilitate the growth of whiskers and platelets. The formation of B4C was studied in the temperature range of 940-1500 deg C in 1-atm argon. Whiskers and platelets of different sizes formed at 1200-1500 deg C. Thin B4C whiskers formed were electron-transparent. The best result was obtained at 1500 deg C.
