Formation And Properties Of Sol-Gel Derived, Alkali Resistant, Cao-Ba0-Si02-Ti02 Coatings

Glass substrates were dip coated with Ca0-Ba0-Si02-Ti02 system sols which were stabilised by chelation with acetic acid. Infrared absorption spectra were taken to understand the processes of sol formation and gel to glass transition. The change in surface composition of coated substrates due to immersion in alkaline solution up to 144h was characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atom absorption spectrophotometry analysis. It was found that alkali corrosion of the coated substrate results in the formation of insoluble Ti02 rich film and sodium and calcium silicate crystals.
