It is a well-known fact that the production of glass is an energy-intensive process. Melting glass from mineral raw materials and cullet demands high temperatures and at least with currently applied melting technology, long residence times to create a final product that fulfils increasing customer demands for quality. Because of the vital economic interest to reduce cost - and driven by the public demand to reduce energy consumption (especially the CO2 footprint), the glass container industry has done a lot to improve energy efficiency over the last 20 years. In this article, Sven-Roger Kahl from Ardagh Glass Group considers energy savings in the container industry beyond melting.
