Chemically Strengthened Glass Containers By Ion Exchange

The fundamental principles of chemical strengthening of glass are briefly reviewed, and a description of a production process for chemically strengthening non-returnable, 12oz beer bottles is presented. Comparative strength and performance data on conventional and strengthened containers from manufacturing through case packaging at the brewery are given. Also included is a discussion on the economics of the process as well as its present and future role in influencing innovations in glass containers.
