With the need for increased production and lower emissions, many glass manufacturers are either modifying their glass melting units to accept oxy-fired boosting burners or building oxy-gas-fired unit melters. Traditional refractories used in the crown and sidewall areas of these oxygen-fired units are eroded and/or corroded at an elevated rate. Although improvements in refractory technologies have played a role in refractory technologies have played a role in enhancing refractory life, often it is still the main concern when it comes to extending campaign life.
