British Glass Urges The Industry To Watch Its Step

In November, the HSE launched a campaign to address slips, trips and falls in the workplace, known as "Watch Your Step". The tone of the campaign has changed from the previous light-hearted and somewhat humorous campaigns of the past. There are good reasons for this new approach; the UK accident statistics for industry indicate there is a very significant problem across all sectors with slips, trips and falls. In 2004 there were more than 11,000 major injuries recorded; 80% of which resulted in fractures. In addition, there have been 30,499 reportable 3-day injuries. The financial cost to the UK has been in excess of £800M. The glass industry has not avoided slips, trips and falls, which are consistently within the top 3 accidents recorded in national statistics. Figures to the end-June 2005 show 147 slips, trips and falls accidents which could easily be reduced.
