Endoscopic procedures have been performed in surgery since the beginning of this century. However, the development of the corresponding surgical techniques was initially treated with great scepticism by medical practitioners. Endoscopy is now firmly established in laparoscopy, i.e. for surgery in the abdominal cavity, gynecology and for surgery of the joints. However, endoscopes are now also steadily gaining ground in the ENT field, urology and thorax surgery.
