We are pleased to share that Nick Kirk, Director at British Glass, has been appointed as one of 10 guest members of the Recyclability Assessment Methodology Technical Advisory Committee (RAM TAC).

The RAM TAC is one of several expert groups set up to advise the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and PackUK on the development and delivery of the UK’s Extended Producer Responsibility (pEPR) reforms. These reforms will fundamentally change how packaging producers are charged for the environmental impact of the materials they place on the market, with the aim of driving higher recycling rates and more sustainable packaging choices.

Guest members of the RAM TAC have been selected for their expertise in specific packaging materials. Nick will bring the perspective of the UK’s glass manufacturing sector to the table, ensuring that the role of glass in a circular economy is fully understood in policy discussions.

Speaking about his appointment, Nick said:

"It’s an honour to join the RAM TAC alongside a group of esteemed packaging experts and contribute to shaping a recyclability assessment methodology that works for all packaging materials. Glass has a vital role to play in the UK’s circular economy ambitions, and I look forward to bringing my packaging experience to these important discussions."

The RAM TAC will advise on how recyclability is defined and measured across different materials, which will directly influence how producers are charged under pEPR. This work will be crucial in creating a fair system that recognises the true environmental performance of each packaging type.

We congratulate Nick on this important appointment and look forward to seeing his contribution help shape a more effective and evidence-based approach to packaging recyclability in the UK.
