A report into the carbon impact of bottling wine into glass/pet bottles has been commissioned by the UK Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP). It recommends that increasing the recycled content of bottles would cut carbon dioxide emissions. PET has a lower carbon impact but emits much more carbon dioxide. This can be reduced by using PET with recycled content (rPET) in bottle manufacture. The report does not indicate a preference for PET over glass and the research should not be compared to other wine bottling materials. Final decisions should instead be based on shelf life, recyclability and consumer preferences. The full report can be download from WRAP's website.
