The entry into force of Regulation 1179, which sets out the criteria under which cullet, for recovery by the industry, ceases to be waste under Directive 2008/98/EC of the European Parliament and of Council, will be a further incentive to recycle and to achieve European goals of “20-20-20 by 2020”. The producers of scrap glass and glassworks no longer have to manage cullet as waste but as mere scrap - if in line with the requirements. The legislature has regulated both the type of waste processable and the recovery operations to follow, the minimum quality standards of the products obtained and all kinds of possible reuse. It also states that it is essential that the company implements a system to manage all these processes and draws up a certification of conformity, stating that the scrap was treated in the manner prescribed - ceasing, therefore, to be waste.
