The value of the UK waste collection and treatment industry is set to increase by more than 30% over five years at current prices, despite a poor economic outlook and waste arisings continuing to remain below pre-recession levels. This upward market trend is underpinned by EU waste and renewable energy directives, and UK waste legislation and government initiatives. Reports of growth in this market come from the AMA annual report, which provides an in-depth analysis of waste collection, waste treatment and disposal across the UK comparing year-on-year trends. The report excludes businesses involved in material recovery for reprocessing such as the mechanical crushing of metal waste and the processing of rubber and plastics into granulates. Based in part on the most up-to-date government data available, the "Waste Management Market Report UK 2012-2015 Analysis" forecasts continued growth in the controlled waste market valued from an estimated £8.9BN in 2011 to £11.7BN by 2016. While the sector was hit by a drop in waste arisings and falling recyclate prices following the 2008 economic downturn - with market values dropping by £400M between 2008-9, the industry has since seen year-on-year growth, driven by landfill taxes and renewable energy targets. This is despite the amount of waste actually being disposed of and treated nationally currently standing at 160M/t, 18M/t below 2007 figures. In the local authority sector, these drivers, along with incentives relating to municipal solid waste and biodegradable municipal waste, have led to a growth and extension of waste collection agreements. The sector has seen 5-7 year residual contracts being extended to 10-11 years as contractors add value by developing kerbside collections, street cleaning and specialist recycling services. With no significant upturn in the UK economy expected over the coming years, the report still predicts market growth to accelerate to meet the 2013 mandatory EU Landfill Directive target. Growth is then forecast to fall off and then accelerate again from 2016 in anticipation of 2020 when the next landfill directive target has to be met along with the Government's 20% renewable energy target. The report costs £675.00. For more information, please visit: www.amaresearch.co.uk
