Waste Industry Worker Fatalities Rise To Double The Five-Year Average

The number of waste industry worker fatalities has risen to almost double the annual average of the previous five years, according to the HSE. 14 employees from the waste industry were killed at work in 2016-17, an increase from the six deaths a year earlier. Compared with other industries, the average fatality rate for the waste industry was 15 times higher than the average across all industries. The HSE annual analysis reports a total of 137 workers were killed at work in Great Britain, a decrease of 10 fatalities from 2015-16. It is the second-lowest year on record after 2013-14, yet on average the number of fatalities has remained relatively similar.
