Viewing Mary Rose

Pilkington has helped to rescue one of Britain's historic treasures, the 500 years old warship Mary Rose. Mary Rose was built for King Henry VIII between 1510-1511 and sank in 1545. The vessel was rescued from the seabed in 1982 and is now under cover in Portsmouth, where it has become one of the country's most popular tourist attractions. Pilkington Optifloat and Optilam glass has been used in the viewing gallery to protect visitors from the wax solutions that have to be sprayed into the ship to preserve it. Chemical stains had rendered the previous glass opaque.
