Valpack Launches New Glass Recovery Scheme

Valpack has joined forces with the London Borough of Camden and Westminster City Council in a new glass kerbside collection service in residential and office areas. The glass collected will be mixed with limestone and bitumen to make the road surface material "glasphalt." The excess of green glass in the UK, due mainly to wine, beer and mineral water imports, can then be used in this process instead of being landfilled. Valpack hopes to see total glass recovery levels in the UK increase sharply over the next five years to bring it closer to the rest of Europe. However, there is concern in the glass industry that Valpack is diverting material destined for recycling in the container sector and that this will damage the collection of glass by colour.
