According to market research company Mintel, wine sales are expected to rise by 2.1% compared to 2008. A Mintel analyst said: "In 2008, the recession was at its peak," adding that people had less wine in bars and restaurants. Sales of wine bottles with a price over US$16 declined and consumers switched to bargains and domestic wines, which made up 75% of wine sales. The study showed that people in the US were drinking less wine due to the recession while 40% were purchasing cheaper wine.
