Another US state is in talks to levy a tax on sugary drinks. A member of the DC Council, the governing body of the District of Columbia, is proposing a penny-per-ounce soda tax. This would generate about US$16M/pa, parts of that money would be used to help local schools implement new, healthier student breakfasts and lunches. The beverage industry is fighting the bill. Soft drink workers and advocates recently held a protest meeting in Washington. "You are not going to make our kids healthier by taking off something from the table they eat at," said Susan Neely, President & CEO of the American Beverage Association.
