Corporate officials from Saint-Gobain Containers has introduced the idea that Milford give the bottle manufacturing company an unprecedented 15-year tax break to keep its plant open. The deal, worth about US$700,000, is part of a proposed financing package that would preserve 222 local jobs and prevent a shutdown, said Bob Ganter, General Manager and senior Vice President of the beer sector. The proposal, which selectmen Chairman Brian Murray said is the first he's heard of in Milford, was due to go before special town meeting for a vote in October. Ganter said the proposal, if sanctioned, would help Saint-Gobain afford a new oxy-fuel furnace that is needed in the near future for the plant to stay operational. Operations of the company's worldwide package sector are for sale & Ganter said it is the only way to save the Milford site.
