Oregon, the state that launched the United States' first bottle deposit programme in 1971, has doubled the payout for recycling used soda cans and glass bottles, from 4 cents to 10, in an attempt to boost the scheme's performance. Use of the system has declined from 90% of all bottle sales state-wide in the 1990s to 64% in 2015, as a result of improved kerbside recycling and inflation. The Oregon Bottle Bill included a stipulation that the deposit would increase should the scheme return less than 80% of cans and bottles for two consecutive years. Nine other US states now have bottle recycling schemes. In Michigan, residents already receive 10 cents for all recycling bottles, while in California, Main and Vermont, up to 15 cents can be earned for large bottles only.
