After running the world's largest trona mine in Sweetwater County for 65 years has announced a US$1.8/BN purchase of a multinational crop protection company. Buried in that notice was a partially obscured reference to the real news for Wyoming: that FMC Corporation is selling its trona mine to help finance the deal. "Any time a company is buying one company and selling another it can be confusing at best," said David Caplan, Manager of Communications & Public Affairs at FMC Minerals. Caplan said the purchase of Denmark-based Cheminova forced it to re-evaluate its portfolio, and the soda ash mine it has controlled for decades got the boot to be leveraged as capital for the major acquisition. "FMC after 65 years has decided to sell its Wyoming business," he said. He said he wouldn't be albe to speculate how much the mine might go for, but the company said it plans to minimise its debt for the US$ 1.8BN purchase.
