WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) has welcomed chancellor Gordon Brown's announcement of a £3/year rise in landfill tax from 2005/6 and the signalling of a £35/tonne rate in the longer term WRAP's CE, Jennie Price said, "This is a tax business does not have to pay. If a business resources and recycles its rubbish, instead of tipping it into a hold in the ground, it won't pay landfill tax. It's as simple as that." Ms Price said the chancellor's statement would send a clear signal that Britain must prepare for a big change in the way it handles the 100M/tonnes waste produced each year by homes, businesses and factories. Coming a day after a new OECD report said low landfill costs in Britain provided little incentive for recycling, news of a hike was greeted by WRAP as especially significant. (whole item)
