Top Of The Glass: New Technology Aims To Product Remelt Quality Glass

The question as to whether waste glass should be processed through materials recycling facilities (MRFs) is a contentious one, as many struggle to produce glass of a suitable quality. Kyrsteline is one company that claims to have an answer to this issue with its glass implosion technology. WRAP carried out a study using Krysteline's implosion technology to evaluate the quality of cullet generated from a MRF. The technology used the same frequancy that is required to fracture glass to reduce it in size. The broken glass can then be readily freed from contaminants, processing the material further. Implosion technology targets glass that is contained in a commingled waste stream, & facilitates seperation from other useful products such as paper, cans, plastic & beverage cartons, which remain undamaged. This technology was originally developed to reduce the volume of waste glass generated on cruise ships. The end product that results from the processing can be used as grit blast, flitration medium, aggregates, sports turf dressing, insulation,resin bond and flooring.
