Time To Bring Back The Bring-Bank

In the UK, more glass is being collected than ever before, but underneath the positive figures lurks a new problem for the glass industry. Around 1.56m/t was recovered in 2007 but the bad news is that because it all tends to be "lumped" together irrespective of colour during the recycling process, over 40% of it is only fit for aggregate used to shore up the nation's road network. During 2007, the glass packaging sector experienced its first dip in the return of usable cullet for many years; a shortfall of 50,000/t. Many in the industry feel this could evolve into a steadily worsening gap between supply and demand. Bring-bank facilities, which work well throughout Europe, could help redress the situation, as explained here.
