Vespel is a technopolymer manufactured by DuPont for use in machine components such as rollers, bearings, air cushions and piston holders. According to the US-based group, Vespel has allowed Techneglas Inc, a subsidiary of the Japanese Nippon Electric Glass (NEG) group, to save thousands of dollers in its plants in Colombus and Pittson in the production of glass parts for cathode ray tubes (CRT). Both plants combined produce 24m glass components for CRT manufacturers each year. Efficiency has been achieved through less need for maintenance and higher and better quality production. One of the most important factors in the production of CRTs is the necessity to avoid thermal checking (stress points and impurities) in the hot glass, because this could cause splintering or breakage during the successive phases of production.
