It was reported in the Lincolnshire Echo, 20 February, that Tesco is to trim the weight of its wine bottles in a bid to cut waste. The company wants a quarter of the wine bottles it sells to be reduced in weight by 2010. It says the measure could save 72,000 tonnes of glass. Andy Gale, Tesco's category technical manager for beers, wines and spirits, said glass was by far the heaviest element of the company's packaging waste. He said: "Advances in glass-making technology mean we can make significant savings - greater than 30% per bottle in some cases. "Lightweight bottles also bring other environmental benefits in the form of reduced energy requirements for manufacture and transport." Tesco has also been talking with other suppliers about reducing packaging.
